PNWTOX model results

General results

We currently have a highly skilled 3D model of the coastal ocean off of Washington and Oregon including the Columbia River and the inland water body of the Salish Sea. This model has been used to address several important coastal issues including:

directly related to the PNWTOX project

• Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) transport

  investigating transport pathways between known source regions for HABs and Washington beaches where they pose a health threat (Giddings et al. 2014)

• freshwater influence on productivity

  investigating the influence of freshwater on productivity in the PNW region (KA Davis et al. 2014)

other Cascadia model spinoffs

• hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen)

  investigating spatial, and temporal variability of low oxygen events which are harmful to many marine species (Siedlecki et al. 2015)

• ocean acidification

  investigating the acidity (pH) of the ocean and how it may influence marine species

• ocean/estuarine connectivity

  investigating connectivity between the ocean and estuaries as well as among along-shore estuaries and the influence on estuarine exchange flow

• ecosystem forecasts

  seasonal coastal ocean prediction of the ecosystem, J-SCOPE, provides short term (6-9 month) forcasts of ocean conditions relevant to managers, fisheries, and ecosystem health
