PNWTOX numerical model - biogeochemistry
Figure 1. PNWTOX biological model configuration
The biological model is an NPZD model designed by N Banas and implemented by N Banas and K Davis (see KA Davis et al. 2014, NS Banas et al. 2009, and NS Banas' website for more information) Model parameters are constrained by extensive in-situ measurements listed on this diagram.
Figure 2. PNWTOX dissolved oxygen submodel configuration
The dissolved oxygen submodel incorporates Oxygen into the NPZD model. This addition also led to the addition of a second detrital pool in the NPZD portion of the model. This addition to the model was designed and implemented by SA Siedlecki and NS Banas and is descrived in Siedlecki et al. 2015. Model parameters again are constrained by extensive in-situ measurements listed on this diagram.
forcing & model set-up
In order to incorporate the biogeochemical model, boundary and initial conditions had to be developed along with defining the biogeochemical model parameters such as phytoplankton growth rate
- biogeochemical parameters (such as growth rate, grazing rate, etc.) were chosen based on extensive observations listed in the above diagrams
- nitrate boundary and initial conditions were implemented by employing a nitrate:salinity relationship based on an all available data in the offshore region
- oxygen boundary and initial conditions were implemented similarly by employing an oxygen:salinity relationship based on an all available data in the offshore region
- phytoplankton and zooplankton were set to a seed stock at the boundaries
